The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are usually first taken in the junior year of high school.  The SAT measures verbal reasoning, critical reading, math problem solving and writing, while the ACT measures up to five components consisting of English, Math, Reading, Science and Writing. The SAT and ACT are taken by college-bound students.

  • Both tests can be taken more than once. The SAT and ACT also provides the opportunity for each student to connect to scholarship opportunities, place out of certain college courses and learn more about their academic strengths.
  • Note that as per the 2017 initiative, every NYC DOE high school junior will have the opportunity to take the SAT once, free of charge, at their high school on SAT Day (date TBD).

If a student would like to take the SAT again, or the ACT, It is the responsibility of each student to officially register for the SAT and/or ACT.

  • Registration takes place online at sat.collegeboard.org (SAT) or at www.actstudent.org (ACT).
  • Students must go online, create an account, and sign up for the SAT and/or ACT at a local testing site, based upon the location of their home.
  • If a student receives free or reduced lunch at Maspeth High School, they should meet with the College Advisor or Guidance Counselor, because they may be entitled to a fee-waiver for the test. Note that students are only allowed two waivers for each exam if they qualify.
  • If they do not qualify, the SAT costs $52.
  • The ACT costs $46 without the essay. The ACT with essay costs $62.50
  • High School codes are needed when you register for SAT and ACT. MHS Code is: 331953
