9th Grade ELA

Incoming ninth grade students will study significant literature in order to enhance their identities and cognizance of what it means to come-of-age while the world around them inevitably changes.  Maspeth students will strengthen empathetic instincts and resilience using the following texts as “skeletons” to reveal their intrinsic autonomy: The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.

An example of a summative assessment is: A text analysis essay which incorporates at least one piece of textual evidence which answers the following questions: Under what circumstance(s) should a person be forgiven.?  Under what circumstances should a person not be forgiven? Texts that may be implemented: A Thousand Splendid Suns and The House on Mango Street.
